NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team represented the 302 well Wednesday night when they welcomed in-state rival Delaware State (2-4) inside the friendly confines of Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (5-2) captured the 74-52 victory over the Hornets to hoist up the Route 1 Rivalry, sponsored by DE529, trophy and have bragging rights. Delaware's 22-point win was their largest margin of victory of the season.
Head coach Sarah Jenkins was recognized with her first win ball prior to opening tip.

"We are a young team and we had a shaky start in the first quarter," said Jenkins. "I did get on them to pick up the intensity and play better basketball. We will continue to work hard and get better as we prepare for Duquesne this Sunday."
Trailing 15-8 after 10 minutes of play, Delaware remembered who they were and put together a strong second-quarter showing. The Blue Hens outscored the Hornets 27-13 and it was highlighted by Makayla Pippin's layup at the 4:17 mark capping the 12-5 spurt to close the gap and regain the lead for good. Jewel Smalls knocked down a triple with 3:42 showing on the clock as part of Delaware's 8-2 run to build an 11-point cushion, 33-22. Delaware State trimmed the lead to five before a pair of Pippin freebies sent the Blue Hens into the locker room with the 35-28 lead.
Delaware didn't let up heading into the second half of play, scoring another 27 points in the third period while holding the Hornets to just nine points. The Blue Hens extended their lead to a game high 25 points, thanks to Michelle Ojo's layup with nine seconds left in the third, 62-37. Delaware maintained the 25-point lead throughout the fourth quarter, including Smalls draining her sixth three pointer of the night at the 2:34 mark, 73-48. The Hornets scored four unanswered points before Mia Yanogacio's free throw settled the 74-52 final.
Smalls led the way with 18 points (6-12 3PT) to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. The fifth-year senior guard has made at least three three-points in five of her seven games played this season and has 16 career games with three-or-more triples made. Pippin followed with 15 points (6-9 FG, 3-4 FT) and 11 rebounds to post her second double-double on the season. Klarke Sconiers chipped win 12 points (5-9 FG, 2-2 FT), six rebounds and two blocks while Nakiyah Mays-Prince poured in 10 points and tied her career-high in assists with five, last done against Longwood as well, and four steals off the bench.
Denijsha Wilson paced Delaware State with 15 points while Tyshonne Tollie and Savannah Brooks finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Delaware shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the field, 25.9 percent (7-27) from the beyond the arc and 76.5 recent (13-17) from the free throw line.
