Women’s Basketball Tussles With Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Delaware women's basketball opened their two-game road trip Sunday evening against Princeton (6-3) inside Jadwin Gymnasium. The Blue Hens (5-4) couldn't get over the hump and dropped a 62-47 decision to the Tigers.
With the scoreboard reading 15-9 in favor of the Tigers after 10 minutes of play, the Blue Hens were determined to claw their way back into this battle. Nakiyah Mays-Prince, who made her first collegiate start, found Tara Cousins set up beautifully behind the three-point line to ignite an 11-3 spurt, making it a 20-all game with 2:46 left on the second-quarter clock. Princeton responded by scoring nine-unanswered points to send the 29-20 game into the break. Kharis Idom and Cousins were responsible for 14 of the Blue Hens 20 first-half points.
After the Tigers pushed its lead to double digits, 33-22 with 7:49 left in the third, Idom's triple kickstarted a 10-5 run to pull within six points, 38-32. Princeton answered back with an 8-0 run to rebuild their double-digit advantage to close out the third period, 46-32. The Tigers saw its lead balloon to a game-high 18 points on four separate occasions before Idom connected from deep to settle the 62-47 final.
Idom led the way for the Blue Hens with a season-best 18 points (6-10 FG, 4-5 3FG) and seven rebounds while Cousins followed with eight points and Makayla Pippin pulled down eight rebounds. Idom had her fifth game of the season reaching double digits in points scored, and her third game with multiple three-pointers made.
The Tiger bench led the way as Kaitlyn Chen finished with 14 points (6-13 FG) and Julia Cunningham scored 11 points. Ellie Mitchell added her name to the mix after she chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Delaware shot 31.9 percent (15-47) from the field, 38.1 percent (8-21) from the beyond the arc, and 81.8 precent (9-11) from the free throw line. Princeton connected on 37.2 percent (22-58) from the field, 35.0 percent (7-20) from three-point territory, and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed Princeton in rebounds (38-33) and had 23 points from bench players as compared to 15 points by Princeton. The Blue Hens' eight three-pointers made were a new season-high.

Delaware will close out their two-game road trip next Sunday, Dec. 18 when the Blue Hens travel to Bethlehem, Pa. and rumble with Lehigh inside Stabler Arena. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.
