Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Hofstra For CAA Opening Win, 77-65

NEWARK, Del. - The reigning defending conference champions University of Delaware women's basketball team opened CAA play Friday evening by playing host to Hofstra (6-6, 0-1 CAA) inside Bob Carpenter Center. To close out the new year in the Bob, the Blue Hens (8-4, 1-0 CAA) earned the 77-65 victory over the Pride in front of the home crowd of 1,012, capturing the conference-opening win for the third-straight season. With the win against the Pride, the Blue Hens extended their winning streak against to 15 games, remain 37-1 all-time at home and is currently are on a three-game winning streak.
The game opened with a hustle play by Makyala Pippin 43 seconds into the opening quarter. Pippin poked the ball in the direction of a diving Nakiyah Mays-Prince who then returned the favor to a running Pippin to lay in the game's opening two points for the Blue Hens, 2-0. Hofstra then put together a 7-2 run to take the 10-4 advantage with 7:04 left. Delaware turned things around and used a 15-7 spurt over the next 6:45 that was capped beautifully by Klarke Sconiers' layup to close out the quarter with the 20-17 lead.
In the opening three minutes of the second quarter, Hofstra bounced back with an 8-3 run to regain the five point lead, 28-23. Demi Burdick called backboard with a triple that pulled the Blue Hens within two, 28-26, with 4:43 remaining. The Pride built a seven-point cushion, 34-27, thanks to Sorelle Ineza jumper at the 2:05 mark. Mays-Prince induced back-to-back charges for Pippin and Jewel Smalls to score the quarter's final three points that helped Delaware close the gap to four points, 34-30, heading into the break.
Hofstra pushed their lead to 42-36 with 5:33 remaining in the third before Delaware stormed into the lead. The Blue Hens responded with a 12-0 run to take a 48-42 lead with two-and-a-half minutes left in the quarter, as Idom and Sconiers combined for 11 points during the stretch. The Pride was able to cut the lead down to 50-48 heading into the final quarter.
After Hofstra got in as close as one at the 5:08 mark in the fourth, 59-58, Idom drained a jumper to kickstart the 16-0 run, which was ended by a Mays-Prince triple to balloon the lead to a game-high 17 points, 75-58. The Pride closed out the game on a 7-2 run to settle the 77-65 final.
Sconiers led the way with 21 points (9-13 FG, 3-5 FT) to go with five rebounds and one block. Idom followed with 16 points (7-14 FG), three assists, two steals and a block. Smalls (eight rebounds, game-high six steals) and Pippin (nine rebounds, five offensive) both poured in 13 points each. Smalls' six-steal outing is the most by a Delaware player this season and most since Jasmine Dickey had six against William & Mary during the first round of the 2022 CAA conference Tournament. Mays-Prince, in charge of directing the Blue Hen offense, dished out a game high 11 assists to go with eight points and five rebounds. With her 11-assist performance, the Chicago, Ill. native is the first Delaware player with at least 10 assists in a game since Abby Gonzales had 10 against Santa Clara on Nov. 30, 2019 and is the most by a CAA player this season. She now ranks third in most assists in a game in program history, just behind Sue Whitfield's 14 against Lehigh on Feb. 17, 1984 and Karen Conlin's 12 against Temple on March 4, 1978.
Ineza paced Hofstra with a 21 points (8-13 FG, 4-7 3FT) off the bench. Brand Thomas chipped in 13 points (5-12 FG) and seven rebounds.
Delaware shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the field, 33.3 percent (8-24) from the beyond the arc, and 55.0 percent (11-20) from the free throw line. Hofstra connected on 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field, 58.8 percent (10-17) from three-point territory, and 41.2 percent (7-17) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed Hofstra in rebounds (42-33), assists (19-17), steals (11-4), second chance points (8-7), points off turnovers (23-19), points in the paint (28-24), and fastbreak points (16-2), while forcing 21 Pride turnovers compared to their 16. Delaware's 19 assists were also the most in a game since also having 19 against Charleston on Feb. 4, 2022. This was also the second-time in the last three games Delaware has won a game after trailing at halftime (trailed Lehigh 46-39 in a 79-67 win on Dec. 18).
