WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team put itself emphatically back in the win column with a 7-0 sweep over Villanova. The match was played at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington and was part of a doubleheader as the UD women also defeated the Wildcats 6-1.
"It is always fun and exciting when both teams compete together and of course come away with the victory," said Delaware Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We played great throughout the day and it started with our doubles. Both teams played with great confidence and it is always pleasing to me as a coach when we work on things in practice and we are able to execute them on the match court. In singles, it was a total team effort from one through six and I loved how our players stayed focused while supporting one another. It is a great day to be a Blue Hen!"
The Blue Hens won the doubles point in a hurry, clinching it with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. UD's top team of James Wilkinson and Pascal Wagemaker cruised to a 6-1 victory, while the duo of Alexandre Gluck and Guilherme Valdoleiros won 6-2. A 7-5 win from Pierce Gilheany and Emiliano Gonzalez Balmaceda completed the doubles sweep.
Luis Molina got the singles action started with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Wilkinson won his match at No. 1 – 6-1, 6-4 – and Wagemaker claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3. Gluck also won in straight sets at No. 5 – 7-5, 6-2.
Valdoleiros came back for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 victory at No. 4, while Tobias Sonne, making his Delaware debut, also won a three-set match 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 to complete the sweep.
The UD men will head back out on the road on Sunday when the squad travels to Richmond, Virginia for a match against VCU. The action is set to begin at 11 a.m.
