NEWARK, Del. – Jameer Nelson Jr. scored a career-high 30 points while Jyare Davis recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds as Delaware ran past James Madison, 81-60, Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Nelson Jr. knocked down five three-pointers, went a perfect 9 of 9 from the foul line, and handed out four assists while not committing a turnover during his outstanding night. Davis, who earned his third straight CAA Rookie of the Week honor earlier in the day, went 7 of 9 from the floor and set his career-high in boards.
Kevin Anderson was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 12 points to go with five assists, while Andrew Carr and Ebby Asamoah each contributed nine points on the night.
Delaware, which won its fifth straight home game over the Dukes, shot 48.3 percent from the field and turned the ball over just seven times.
Vado Morse paced JMU with 15 points, but finished just 5 of 17 from the floor. Terrence Edwards supplied 11 points and nine rebounds for the Dukes, who shot only 37.3 percent from the floor.
Delaware led by three midway through the first half but then scored six consecutive points to go up 30-21 on an Anderson layup at the four-minute mark. However JMU answered with six points of its own, and following a Davis dunk, the Dukes' Justin Amadi beat the buzzer with a tip-in to make it a 32-29 game at the break.
The Blue Hens were still up three early in the second half before going on an 11-3 spurt that increased the margin to 50-39 with 12:30 remaining. JMU got back within 57-50 at the eight-minute mark, but Delaware scored 12 of the next 16 points and led comfortably from there.
Martin Ingelsby
"I'm proud of this group, finishing up a three games in five days grind. We were really connected, and the group that finished the game was the difference. I can't say enough about Jameer, he was fabulous and we want the ball in his hands. He is super talented, and when our guards play off each other we're really potent. This was a good team win for us."
