» The University of Delaware baseball team opens the 2022 season this weekend when it travels to DeLand, Florida for the Stetson Tournament. The Blue Hens will kick off their campaign on Friday at 3 p.m. when they face the host Hatters. UD then takes on Manhattan on Saturday at 12 noon, before battling fourth-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday at 9 a.m.
» Delaware welcomes back 25 players and adds 14 newcomers from last year's squad that finished with a 12-22 record during the Covid-shortened season. Third baseman Joey Loynd batted .294 with a team-leading 13 doubles, while leftfielder Aidan Kane ranked third on the team with a .271 batting average. First baseman Joseph Carpenter tied for the team lead with five home runs, while Jake Dunion hit .397 in 14 starts.
» Chris Ludman will anchor the starting rotation after going 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA last season in 11 starts on the mound. Dom Velazquez earned a pair of wins as a starter while pacing the squad with 68 strikeouts, while reliever Mike Biasiello tied Ludman for the team lead with three wins and struck out over a batter an inning.
» Carpenter and Dunion were both named CAA Preseason Honorable Mention, while the Blue Hens were picked eighth in the preseason poll.
» Stetson was selected third in the ASUN Preseason Poll after finishing with a 26-33 record in 2021. Starting pitcher Nick Durgin, who was a first team All-ASUN selection a year ago as a freshman, has been named to the league's Preseason All-Conference Team.
» Manhattan was picked tied for sixth in the MAAC Preseason Poll, while third baseman David Bermudez and designated hitter Matt Padre were Preseason All-MAAC selections. The Jaspers finished with a 12-24 record in 2021, posting an impressive .277 team batting average but a 7.03 team ERA.
» Notre Dame was picked third in the Atlantic Division in the ACC Preseason Poll after winning the conference regular season title last spring. The Irish, who were picked fourth in the Baseball America Preseason Poll, finished 34-13 a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals. Starting pitcher John Michael Bertrand, who went 8-2 with a 3.21 ERA last spring, has been named an NCBWA Preseason All-American.
