NEWARK, Del. - Delaware Athletics held its annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day event on Sunday, February 20 where nearly 200 girls joined the Blue Hens for a day full of sports. It's the 35th year of celebrating the national event, which is organized by the Women's Sports Foundation.
The Blue Hens celebrated the day with young girls having the opportunity to learn different sports by participating in various activities run by several Blue Hen sports programs. Women's basketball head coach Natasha Adair kicked off the event with an introduction that had all in attendance excited for the day to come. Members from the UD field hockey, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, track & field, volleyball, cheer and dance teams, and club gymnastics programs volunteered to teach different skills for their respective sports.
Blue Hen Quotes…
"I love this! Watching our student-athletes interact with these young kids is so important for everyone involved. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for sport and my participation in it and what it taught me. The powerful combination of sports and education lays the foundation for generations to come. Events like this allow our student-athletes, coaches, and staff to play a part in the growth of women in sports by giving back and sharing their love for sports with young girls eager to learn." - Chrissi Rawak, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation
"It's a blast! It's just fun to see the kids get so excited when they learn new things. Helping and watching the kids with little to no experience get so excited when they make the smallest improvement is really fun to be part of." - Genevieve Johnson, Field Hockey Student-Athlete
"It's an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of participating in athletics and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. I think it is important for girls and women to know that they belong in sports and that is okay to compete. I would have loved to have had this experience as a kid because I would have known that it's okay for us to be involved in sports. I think it's pretty cool to see the girls engage with us and experience different sports here to see what they like while also feeling like they are part of UD Athletics." – Lani Mason, Volleyball Student-Athlete
"This event is one of our favorite days and it is great that UD Athletics sponsors this every year. The girls and the student-athletes have so much fun together. We are in a position to be role models to these young girls and sometimes in our daily grind, we don't think of it. But then when we are at an event like this, wearing our UD gear and the kids are hanging on your every word, it's pretty cool, we remember the impact that we have. It is very meaningful and always has been." - Kevin Gruber, Head Rowing Coach
