NEWARK, Del. – The next Black History Month feature for Delaware Athletics spotlights Kedrick Whitehead. The Delaware football student-athlete sat down with UD athletics to share why celebrating Black History Month is important and why he's motivated to be successful.
"Black History Month to me is about celebrating both the past and current challenges that black people have endured and still found a way to succeed in the face of adversity," Whitehead expressed.
Whitehead, a native of Middletown, Del. just wrapped up his fourth season with the Blue Hens. The All-American and All-CAA defensive back has played a huge part in UD's secondary unit being so successful. A team leader and co-captain for the Blue Hens, Whitehead is majoring in health behavior science.
For Whitehead, he's always striving to be the best that he can be. "One thing that motivates me to be successful is waking up every day with a chip on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong," Whitehead said. "Being a black man in America, often times I find people rooting against me without taking a moment to get to know what I stand for or my story."
A part of Whitehead's story is that he is a member of the fraternity Omega Psi Phi. The beauty of history is learning about the past and appreciating the people that have made a difference and have inspired you.
"A public figure that inspires me to be great is my fraternity brother Carter G. Woodson," Whitehead shared. "With the help of our fraternity Omega Psi Phi, Brother Woodson founded Black History Month in 1926, formally known as Black History Week. Omega man Carter G. Woodson also was the second African American to earn a Doctorate degree from Harvard University!"
