NEWARK, Del. – A trio of Blue Hens led the way Friday morning as the University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to winning ways by capturing a wire-to-wire 65-61 CAA home victory over Elon (15-10, 7-8), snapping the Phoenix five-game winning streak. With the win, Delaware is now 19-6 on the season and 13-2 in league play.
"We put 40 minutes on our board today, from start to finish! This time of year everyone has something to play for," said head coach Natasha Adair. "For Elon, they had some people back - Evonna McGill and Ariana Nance are back - those are two key starters that provide instant offense for them. Elon has won five in a row coming in and we knew that this was going to be a dog fight. We have so much respect for Charlotte and what she has done for her program. I want to talk about our players and how resilient we were. Lizzie Oleary was key, those are the shots that she has taken her whole career. Jasmine Dickey - she took a minute to get going but once she got going and it was winning time. No game for the rest of this season is going to be easy but we showed today that we can fight, we can play 40 full minutes and we can put it together. People on our team are going to step up and put us in a position to win and I am just so proud of how we came out today and fought."
After trailing 17-12 through 12:08 of play, Lizzie Oleary laid in two to ignite a 15-3 Delaware run to take the 27-21 lead. The Phoenix pulled within two (27-25) with four-straight points coming off the hands of Evonna McGill before Jasmine Dickey sank a pair of free throws to send the Blue Hens into the break with the 29-25 lead.
Both teams played each other even in the third, scoring 15 points apiece, with Ty Battle's layup in the final seconds built a four-point cushion for the Blue Hens, 44-40.
A Vanessa Taylor triple helped Elon get in as close as two (49-47) with 6:51 showing on the fourth-quarter clock. Delaware responded 36 seconds later with two of Dickey's free throws as part of the 8-2 run to claim the game-high eight-point lead (57-49) with 3:05 left. The Phoenix answered back with a 7-0 spurt, capped by McGill's three-point play to make it a one-point game, 57-56. The Blue Hens remained composed over the final 1:19, outscoring Elon 10-5 to settle the 65-61 final.
Dickey led all scorers with 25 points (9-of-13 FT) and 11 rebounds to post her 13th double-double on the season. She added three assists, two steals and a block to her stat line. Oleary followed with 15 points (6-of-8 FTG, seven rebounds and two steals. Battle added 11 points (4-of-7 FG, 1-of-2 3FG) and 10 rebounds to register her 17th double-double on the season. Battle and Ty Skinner (six rebounds, five assists) nabbed two steals each.
McGill finished with 21 points (9-of-16 FG, 3-of-3 FT) and five rebounds off the pine to pace Elon. Brie Perpignan chipped in 12 points and seven assists while Tyja Traore poured in 11 points (5-of-6 FG).
Delaware shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field, 25 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free-throw line. Elon connected on 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point territory and 100 percent (8-of-8) from the charity stripe. Delaware held the rebound margin advantage (42-32) while scoring 22 second-chance points off of 19 offensive rebounds. The Blue Hens led the way in blocks (3-0), steals (9-6) and fast break points (15-5). Elon held the edge in assists (15-11), points in the paint (36-28) and bench points (35-4) while scoring 19 points off of 12 Blue Hen turnovers.
