NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team showed up and showed out on Senior Day by maintaining a double-digit lead over the final 32:34 to capture the dominating 67-45 CAA home finale win over William & Mary (10-17, 5-11 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside the Bob Carpenter Center. Under the guidance of the reigning CAA Coach of the Year Natasha Adair, Delaware (20-6, 14-2 CAA) has won 20 regular-season games for the first time dating back to the 2012-13 season.
Prior to tip off, the Blue Hen senior class of Ty Battle, Jasmine Dickey, Tee Johnson, Paris McBride, Lizzie Oleary, Maddie Sims and team managers George Class-Peters and Mollie Patmore were honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to the University of Delaware women's basketball program.
"Anytime that you can compete on your home court on senior night and play the way they did is great. That was probably one of our best starts that we have had all season and it started with our leaders," said Adair. "Credit to Ed and his team, you know they are going to compete and battle, so we needed to withstand a run. I am proud of what we were able to do. This was our 20th win - back-to-back 20 wins seasons and counting - with a special group that has broken so many records. They will leave their legacy and how awesome was it to be able for it to be done today in front of the home crowd."
Delaware kick-started the celebration with its best start this season, outscoring William & Mary 22-8 in the first quarter. Dickey and Johnson were responsible for 12 of the Blue Hens' 22 opening quarter points. An Ava Stevenson triple pulled the Tribe within 13 points (26-13) with 6:02 remaining in the second quarter. Battle laid in two to ignite an 11-3 run from 4:56 to 1:10 to push Delaware's lead up to 21 points, 37-16. William & Mary scored four-answered points in the remaining 16 seconds to send the 37-20 game into the break.
The Blue Hens kept applying pressure in the third period as the lead ballooned to a game-high 24 points twice, with Dickey's jumper at the 2:51 mark (51-27) and again with McBride connecting from deep with 1:02 left (56-32). Entering the fourth quarter, the Tribe used a 10-4 spurt to trail by 17 points, 60-43, before Delaware closed out the game with a 7-2 run, capped by Dickey's three-pointer to settle the 67-45 final.
Dickey led all scorers with 22 points and 15 rebounds to post her 14th double-double on the season. She added two steals and a block to her stat line. Battle followed with 17 points (8-of-13 FG) and 10 rebounds (six offensive) to register her 18th double-double on the season. She also chipped in a pair of blocks and two steals. Oleary swatted away a game-high three blocks to go with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Johnson (four rebounds, three assists) and McBride (two assists, two steals) both poured in seven points.
Riley Casey finished with 10 points to pace William & Mary.
Delaware shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68) from the field, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free-throw line.
