Blue Hens Can’t Hang On at Temple

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The University of Delaware men's tennis won the doubles point, but could not hang on in singles, falling 4-3 to Temple on Thursday. With the setback, the Blue Hens slip to 5-8 on the season.
"Today was a tough day for the program," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We competed well throughout the day but we lost a little focus in the end. It is a good learning moment for our players as we had several chances to turn this around. This definitely stings a little bit but we will bounce back as we prepare for our Sunday matches."
The Blue & Gold jumped out early to take the doubles point as the team of James Wilkinson and Pierce Gilheany got things started with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. After Temple evened things, Pascal Wagemaker and Guilherme Valdoleiros won a tight 7-6 (2) decision at No. 3 to clinch the point.
Temple regained momentum, winning at each of the top-three singles positions to go ahead 3-1. Valdoleiros took down his opponent 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5, but the Owls clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 4.
Tobias Sonne claimed a three-set victory at No. 6 – 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 – to complete the scoring.
The Blue Hens will be back in action on Sunday as they return home for their first match on campus. Delaware will host St. Francis (Brooklyn) at 11 a.m. at the Delaware Tennis Courts.
