Men’s Tennis Battles Past St. Francis Brooklyn 6-1

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team, playing its first match of the season on its home courts, claimed a decisive 6-1 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday. With the victory, the Blue Hens improve to 6-8 on the season.

"It's great to be playing outside again and I am proud of my players for being tough in the windy conditions," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We competed well throughout the day and this is a good confidence booster for us as we prepare for our South Carolina matches."

Delaware took the doubles point as James Wilkinson and Pierce Gilheany opened the match with a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 position. After the Terriers knotted things with a win at No. 2, Guilherme Valdoleiros and Pascal Wagemaker won the doubles point for the Blue & Gold with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Wilkinson kept the momentum on the side of the Blue Hens with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top singles position. St. Francis got on the board, but UD took each of the final four contests to win the match.

At No. 3 singles, Wagemaker dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but came back to win each of the next two sets for the three-set victory. Tobias Sonne claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 to provide the clinching point for the Blue Hens. Valdoleiros also took home a straight-set victory by a 6-4, 7-6 (4) score, while Gilheany battled back for a three-set victory after dropping his first set.

The Blue Hens will next travel to South Carolina for a trio of matches during spring break. Delaware will play at South Carolina State on Sunday, March 27 before taking on CAA foe Charleston on March 29 and The Citadel on March 31.
