NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware Athletics Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Tom Evans competed at the 2022 Arnold Amateur Strongman Championships earlier this month at the 2022 Arnold Sports Festival (ASF) where he took home the title of "World's Top Amateur Strongman."
"It is a super humbling feeling," Evans reflects. "I have spent a lot of time and energy getting to this point in my strongman career. Additionally, while it is an individual sport, I have received a tremendous amount of help from my wife, family, friends, and colleagues getting to this point. I am glad their hard work has paid off as well."
Evans competed in six events across three days of competition. The strength and conditioning coach had to put his coaching techniques to the test and use them for himself, as he competed in the Deadlift Ladder, Wheelbarrow Medley, Bag Over Bar, Axle Press, Squat for Reps, and Stone Over Bar.
At the end of the three-day competition, it was Evans that stood atop the podium. World's Top Amateur Strongman was a pretty good ring to it. Evans recorded 52.87 points to win the title.
So, how did Evans end up in Columbus, Ohio competing for and earning the "World's Top Amateur Strongman" honor?
"I started training for strongman quickly after my professional football career was over," said Evans. "I have always loved competing and training in the weight room. So, I sought strongman to be a hobby for me as I progress through my strength and conditioning career. Luckily, it has panned out to be more than a hobby."
After competing at the 2021 Strongman Corporation Open Nationals Competition, Evans earned a spot at the 2022 Arnold Strongman World Championships after recording 269.5 points through the six events. Evans competed in the Rogue Max Log Press, Gorilla Strength Wheelbarrow Deadlift, Rogue Bag Toss, Rogue Axle Clean & Press, Wheelbarrow Race, and Rogue Yoke Walk.
A native of Franklin, NC, Evans works with the Delaware men's and women's lacrosse programs, and assists with the football program. Now, all of the programs will be able to say that a strongman has helped them excel in their sport!
"I am well aware that I would not be able to pursue both my passions as a strength and conditioning coach and professional strongman without the support of the University of Delaware and colleagues around me," Evans said. "Whether it is help with my own training or making sure that my responsibilities are addressed when I am gone competing. I am very thankful to be in the position I am in, and have support from everyone at the university as well as the student-athletes that I work with on a daily basis."
