Women’s Basketball Falls To JMU In Regular-Season Finale

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team couldn't erase the early double-digit deficit and dropped the 78-62 CAA road decision to James Madison (14-15, 10-8 CAA) Saturday afternoon inside Atlantic Union Bank Center in Harrisonburg, Va. The Blue Hens close out the regular season with a 21-7 mark on the season and 15-3 in conference play.
Delaware secured the No. 2 seed in next week's 2022 CAA Women's Basketball Championships, presented by Primis. The Blue Hens will face No. 7 seed William & Mary in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m. inside Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
Delaware opened the scoring with a 6-2 run, capped by a Jasmine Dickey layup at the 7:57 mark of the first quarter. JMU responded with a 8-0 run of their own to take the 10-6 lead with 5:28 remaining. Ty Battle sank a pair of free throws as part of the Blue Hens scoring six-straight points to take the 12-10 advantage with 3:57 showing on the first quarter clock. Kiki Jefferson ignited a 10-0 run for the Dukes to close out the quarter with the 20-12 lead.
The Blue Hens trimmed the deficit to five points, 25-20, after Dickey finished off Paris McBride's feed at the 5:22 mark of the second quarter. The Dukes pushed the lead back up to double-digits thanks to Jamia Hazell's free throw with 1:54 left (34-22). Delaware used a 5-2 run in the remaining 1:46 to get within single-digits heading into the break, 36-27.
JMU blew the game wide open as they outscored Delaware 22-9 in the third quarter, 58-36. The Dukes remained in control in the fourth, pushing their lead to a game-high 26 points, 62-36, with 7:35 remaining. Delaware sliced the deficit to 13 points (75-62), courtesy of Tyi Skinner pouring in two free throws, with 1:08 remaining. Madison Green scored JMU's next three points to settle the 78-62 final.
Dickey led all scorers with 21 points to go with 12 rebounds to post her 15th double-double of the season. Battle finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds to register her career-best 20 double-doubles on the season. McBride dished out six assists and nabbed two steals.
Jefferson led JMU with 20 points while Hazell and Brianna Tinsley chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively. Jaylin Carodine pulled down a game-best 17 rebounds.
Delaware shot 27.4 percent (20-of-73) from the field, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc and 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the free-throw line. James Madison connected on 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, 35 percent (7-of-20) from three-point territory and 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the charity stripe. Delaware held the rebound margin advantage (46-44) while scoring 21 second-chance points off of 21 offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed James Madison in blocks (1-0), points in the paint (26-24) and fast break points (14-2) while scoring 18 points off of 12 Duke miscues. The Dukes held the edge in assists (11-10) and bench points (22-9) while both teams were even with five steals apiece.
