WASHINGTON, D.C. – The fifth-seeded Delaware basketball team jumped out to a big first half lead and held off top-seeded Towson to post a 69-56 win over the Tigers in the CAA Tournament Semifinals Monday night at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.
The Blue Hens earn their second trip to the CAA Championship Game in program history, and will face the UNCW-Charleston winner Tuesday at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
Kevin Anderson paced Delaware with 17 points and hit four triples to go with four assists, while Jyare Davis contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Dylan Painter scored 12 points off the bench, Jameer Nelson Jr. chipped in 11 points, and Andrew Carr grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Charles Thompson scored 13 points for Towson, which shot just 31.0 percent from the field including 4 of 23 from three-point range.
After the teams traded the lead early, Delaware scored eight consecutive points to take a 15-8 advantage seven minutes into the game. After Towson pulled within 21-16 midway through the stanza, the Blue Hens exploded for an 11-point run to go up 32-16 with five minutes to play. However Towson closed the half with a 12-3 spurt to cut Delaware's margin to 35-28 at the break.
Davis opened the second half with a jumper, but Towson scored the next seven points to make it a 37-35 game and force a UD timeout with 17:03 remaining.
The Blue Hens never relinquished the lead, while consecutive triples by Anderson and Ebby Asamoah made it a 54-44 game with 8:14 to play. Thompson answered with a layup for the Tigers, but Anderson found Painter for the layup and then buried his fourth triple of the night to increase the lead to 59-46 with five and a half minutes left.
Towson scored the next four points, but would not get closer the rest of the way.
Martin Ingelsby
"Our guys were ready to play, and that's a really good team we beat. I'm really proud of our seniors. They're our leaders, and we needed them to play well down here. We've really locked in defensively, and to hold two opponents in the 50's is impressive. We stayed poised when they made a run, and did a good job of executing with timely possessions and big shots down the stretch."
