Women’s Tennis Tops NJIT 6-1

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team exacted revenge from a loss earlier this season, defeating NJIT 6-1 on Sunday at the Delaware Tennis Courts. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 15-5 on the season.
"This was a team that we lost to in the fall pretty badly so it feels good to come out today and see how much our players have developed in the last few months," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We played very well in the doubles as we executed our shots with preciseness and we took an early lead in singles by winning most of the first sets on our courts. We will continue building and using this confidence as we prepare for Morgan State on Tuesday."
The Blue Hens took the doubles point with ease as the duo of Eliza Askarova and Samantha Svendsen claimed a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position, while Julieta Honrubia and Isabella Montana clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
NJIT won the first singles match, but that is all that Delaware would allow. Montana defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to put UD back on top before Askarova won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Dominika Sujova clinched the match for the Blue & Gold with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
Honrubia (7-6, 6-2) and Alina Vasilenko (2-6, 7-5, 10-4) completed the scoring with wins at No. 3 and No. 2, respectively.
Delaware will be back in action on Tuesday when the squad hosts Morgan State in a 2 p.m. match at the Delaware Tennis Courts.
