NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine-consecutive matches, defeating Drexel 4-3 on Friday afternoon in a CAA matchup at the Delaware Tennis Courts. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 14-8 on the season and 4-0 against conference opponents. Prior to the match, UD recognized the program's three seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
"Another strong win for our guys today and this was a great way to finish off the regular season going 4-0 in the conference," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "Our doubles continue to look strong and we are getting better with each match we play. In singles, Drexel battled us hard, but we played a little better in the end."
The match was exciting from the start as the doubles point was a back-and-forth affair. James Wilkinson and Pierce Gilheany took the top match by a 6-1 score before Drexel came back to win the final five points to win at No. 2 and even things up. Alexandre Gluck and Liam Hedlund went into a tiebreaker at the No. 3 position before coming away with a 7-6 win to clinch the point for UD.
Wilkinson kept momentum on Delaware's side as won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles before Luis Molina eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 to put Delaware up 3-0. Guilherme Valdoleiros put away any suspense as he claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6 to seal the match.
The Blue Hens will be back in action next weekend when the squad travels to Elon for the CAA Tournament. The first round will be played on Friday and UD's opponent will be determined in the upcoming days.
