Women’s Tennis Takes Down Drexel 6-1 on Senior Day

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team won its third-consecutive match, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Drexel on Friday in a CAA match at the Delaware Tennis Courts. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 17-5 on the season and 2-2 against conference opponents. Prior to the match, UD recognized the program's four seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
"That was another solid win today for our ladies," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We played great doubles today and we definitely played on our terms. I was really impressed with how well we were able to finish off points on all 3 courts. In singles, we played with great confidence and poise and we are doing a lot of good things out there."
The Blue & Gold jumped out to a quick start with a sweep of the doubles point. Isabella Montana and Julieta Honrubia opened things up with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 position before Dominika Sujova and Alina Vasilenko clinched the point at No. 1 with a 6-3 victory. Eliza Askarova and Maria Constantinou also came away with a 6-3 win.
Vasilenko did not let up as the match moved into singles play, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Honrubia also put together an easy with at No. 3 by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Montana sealed the match for the Blue Hens as her 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 gave UD the needed fourth point.
Constantinou (6-1, 4-6, 6-1) and Sujova (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) kept playing and came away with three-set victories at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively.
The Blue Hens will return to the court on Tuesday as they travel to Towson for a CAA match that is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The contest was previously scheduled to be played last week but was postponed due to inclement weather.
