TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team won its fourth-consecutive match, and second straight over a CAA opponent, with a 7-0 sweep of Towson on Tuesday afternoon in the makeup of a postponed match from earlier this month. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 18-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference matches.
"That was a good win for us today and I'm proud of our girls for maintaining discipline in the tough windy conditions," said Director of Tennis Pablo Montana. "We played solid doubles and just focused on fundamentals. In singles, we showed confidence and momentum and we played on our terms. We will use this momentum as we prepare for Delaware State on Saturday."
The Blue Hens had no trouble from the get-go, taking the doubles point within the first two matches. Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova claimed a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position while Eliza Askarova and Maria Constantinou also defeated their opponents 6-1 at No. 3 to clinch the point.
Constantinou opened singles play as she blew past her opponent at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Sujova also breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 before Julieta Honrubia sealed the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
Askarova came away with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles while Vasilkenko registered UD's fifth straight-set win at No. 2 with a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Viva Laas completed the sweep with a marathon, three-set victory, winning by a 6-7, 7-6, 13-11 score.
The Blue & Gold will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Delaware State at the Delaware Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
