Baseball Preview: Villanova/Maryland Eastern Shore

» Delaware takes on Villanova Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the championship game of the Liberty Bell Classic at Citizens Bank Park. Tickets can be purchased for $5 at the Home Plate Ticket Windows (off Pattison Avenue), with entrance to the park through the Home Plate VIP/Suite Entrance. Free parking is available in the Phillies "P" lot off Darien Street.
» The Blue Hens have won eight Liberty Bell Classic titles, the last coming in 2013. Delaware advanced to the championship game in 2018 and 2019, the last two years the event was held, but lost to Lafayette both years.
» UD (20-13, 5-4 CAA) ranks 21st in the country with a .304 batting average, and the Blue Hens lead Division I with 20 triples. Joseph Carpenter ranks 10th in the nation with 16 doubles, while Bryce Greenly is 28th by hitting .403 on the year.
» Villanova (13-18-1, 4-5 Big East) is led by Chris Rotondo who is hitting .352 with team-highs of 45 hits, 28 runs scored, nine homers, 32 RBI and 11 steals. Joey Castellanos is batting .331 on the year and is tied with Rotondo for the team lead with seven doubles.
» Delaware leads the all-time series with Villanova, 41-30, but the Wildcats won both meetings last season. The teams have met twice in the Liberty Bell Classic final at CBP, with Villanova posting a 7-6 victory in 2011 and the Blue Hens recording an 8-3 triumph in 2013. Delaware has won six of the eight meetings between the school in the tournament.
» UD has a quick turnaround on Wednesday when the Blue Hens are back home to host Maryland Eastern Shore at 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
» Eastern Shore (11-25, 10-10 MEAC) is paced by Ryan Howe who is hitting .342 with 40 hits and 26 RBI.
» The Blue Hens and Hawks have met just twice previously, an 8-2 UD victory in 2019 and a 5-3 Eastern Shore win in 2020. The teams will meet again on May 4 in Princess Anne, Md.
