NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to William & Mary on Saturday afternoon in a CAA matchup. The neutral-site match was played at Towson. With the setback, the Blue Hens slip to 14-5 on the season and 1-2 against conference opponents.
Delaware started quickly by winning the first two doubles matches to clinch the point. Julieta Honrubia and Isabella Montana claimed a 6-0 win at No. 3 before Alina Vasilenko and Dominika Sujova won 6-2 at No. 1.
After William & Mary won at No. 2 singles to tie the match up, Montana defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 to put UD back on top. A pair of victories by the Tribe gave them a 3-2 lead, but Sujova came back at No. 5 for a three-set victory 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to knot things up 3-3.
It all came down to the No. 1 position where Eliza Askarova took the first set 6-2. However, her opponent came back to win the next two sets that clinched the overall match for William & Mary.
The Blue Hens will be right back on the court on Sunday morning when they host NJIT at the Delaware Tennis Courts. The math is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. and will be a rematch of a dual match in the fall which the Highlanders won 6-1.
