Mary Hearin Named UD Women's Soccer Associate Head Coach

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware women's soccer head coach Mike Barroqueiro has announced the hiring of Mary Hearin as an associate head coach for the Blue Hens.
Hearin arrives in Newark after a six-year stint as assistant coach at NJIT. She helped lead the Highlanders to three postseason appearances during her tenure, including consecutive trips to the ASUN Tournament Semifinals in 2018 and 2019. The NJIT staff was named 2018 ASUN Coaching Staff of the Year after the squad finished second in the regular season standings and recorded a program-record 11 wins. Last year NJIT qualified for the America East Quarterfinals and ended the season with five consecutive shutouts.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Mary to our Blue Hen family!" Barroqueiro said. "I was fortunate enough to coach Mary during her college career and since then have witnessed her evolution from an amazing team leader to an incredible mentor to her student-athletes. She's gained valuable experience leading some of the best youth players in the country as well as working with an incredible staff at NJIT to help build them into a perennial conference contender. On top of that, Mary is a high-character person who puts everyone else before her. I'm very excited to watch her pour all of herself into our kids here at UD. It's certainly an exciting day to be a Blue Hen!"
Hearin, a former player and assistant coach at UMBC, brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to Delaware.
She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at her alma mater in 2007-08, and was a full-time assistant coach with the Retrievers in 2008 and 2009.
From 2013-16, Hearin worked as a staff assistant coach at Maryland United Football Club with the Elite Clubs National League u13 through u18 girls teams. At the same time, she was assistant girls soccer coach at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md.
Hearin was a head coach and assistant coach at Freestate Soccer Alliance, based in Bowie, Md., from 2007 through 2013. She has also served as head coach for teams at FC Copa Academy and PSA Wildcats since 2016.

A native of North Potomac, Md., Hearin graduated magna cum laude from UMBC with a degree in history in 2006. She appeared in 69 games and started 63 for the Retrievers during her college career.
Hearin excelled on and off the field at UMBC, earning America East Conference Second Team and All-Rookie honors in 2003 and making the America East All-Tournament Team in 2005.
She was a tri-captain of the Retrievers from three seasons from 2004 through 2006 and served as president of the UMBC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Golden Key International Honor Society, she was twice honored on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team, receiving second-team honors in 2005 and first-team recognition in 2006.
