NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware Women's Soccer team kicked off the season for Blue Hen Athletics tonight with a 3-0 victory over Route 1 rival Delaware State at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium for their fourth-straight season-opening win.
"I am proud of the way the team came together in our season opening win," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We played a lot of new faces today along with our veterans. I am really high on this incoming class. They have done a really good job and they don't look like freshman. More than anything this is a fun group to coach. I love the way that Sara and Izzy work together. I am going to take it in as they only overlap for a year and its going to be a lot of fun to watch this season."
After going the first 20 minutes without a goal by either team, it all of a sudden became a Blue Hen goal frenzy.
The Blue Hens spread the field well as Laura Fluegge found Izzy Lane down the right side for the magic touch as she sailed it inside the box for Sara D'Appolonia to score Delaware's first goal of the season in the 19th minute.
One minute later, Lane was at it again teaming up with D'Appolonia. This time she had a two-touch assist after receiving a pass from D'Appolonia that Raychel Speicher headed into the left side of the net to give the Blue Hens a 2-0 edge halfway through the first period.
In the 67th minute, it was D'Appolonia that scored on a corner kick that saw Speicher and Lane serve up a double assist and extend the Blue Hen lead to 3-0.Â
Sophomore Mia Reed (1-0) made her second career start and put in 45 minutes in the goal to earn her first career win. Kelly Chittenden her first-ever appearance in the second half for the Blue Hens as both goalkeepers sent away one shot each.
The Blue Hens (1-0) started three true freshmen in the opener, as Lane, Sofie Igelkjon, and Maddie Schepers all appeared in the starting XI.
Delaware State fell to 0-1 to start the season. Goalkeeper Ashley Maribo finished with eight saves on the night.
Next up for Delaware is a matchup at Villanova on Sunday, August 21 at 1 p.m.
