Women’s Basketball Produces Quartet Of Double-Digit Scorers Against Purdue Fort Wayne

ESTERO, Fla. – The University of Delaware women's basketball continued to play at the 2023 Clean Simple Eats Gulf Coast Showcase Saturday afternoon and faced Purdue Fort Wayne (3-2) inside Hertz Arena. It was a tale of two halves as the Blue Hens (1-3) dropped an 88-74 final to the Mastodons, extending the losing streak to three games. Delaware will face Vermont tomorrow at 11 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on FloHoops.

First Quarter
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue Hens were led by a quartet of double-digit scorers.
- Klarke Sconiers led the way with 17 points (7-10 FG, 3-5 FT) to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
- Tara Cousins followed with 16 points (7-16 FG).
- Ande'a Cherisier tied her career-best 13 points (6-9 FG) to go with three rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.
- Chloe Wilson chipped in 11 points (9-10 FT).
- Wilson and Sydney Boone (five assists) both paced the Blue Hen rebounding with six and five rebounds, respectively.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 46.7 percent (28-60) from the field, 21.7 (5-23) from beyond the arc and 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line.
- The Blue & Gold finished with 15 assists, two blocks, three steals, 22 bench points, 40 points in the paint, two fast break points, 13 second-chance points off of nine offensive rebounds and seven points off of nine Mastodons miscues.
First Quarter
- Boone opened the game 25 seconds in with a triple to give Delaware the early 3-0 lead.
- Things remained close throughout the quarter before the Blue Hens used an 11-3 run kickstarted by Rebecca Demeke's three-pointer at the 2:27 mark, pushing the lead up to nine, 29-20.
- Amellia Bromenschenkel connected from deep with seven seconds left to trim the lead to six, 29-23 heading into the second stanza.
- Delaware remained in the driver's seat fending off Purdue Fort Wayne's spurts of making it a one/two possession game.
- A Destinee Marshall freebie for the Mastodons pulled the team within four points with 1:42 showing on the clock.
- Six straight Delaware points coming off the hands of Cousins, Wilson and Cherisier built a double-digit cushion for the Blue Hens, 47-37, before Bromenschenkel knocked down a buzzer-beater to send the 47-39 game into the break.
- The tide switched to Purdue Fort Wayne as the squad outscored the Blue Hens 28-12 coming out the half.
- The last time Delaware held the lead was at the 7:39 mark thanks to Sconiers' layup, 49-45.
- The Mastodons regained the lead for good courtesy of Bromenschenkel's three-pointer with 5:56 remaining.
- Purdue Fort Wayne's lead ballooned to eight, 62-54, before Wilson and Cousins worked together to get the Blue Hens as close as three points, 62-59, with 17 seconds left.
- Then a pair of triples in the final five seconds would push the Mastondons' lead back up to eight to close the quarter.
- Purdue Fort Wayne would go on to run away with the game, extending the lead to a game-high 15 points, 76-61, with 7:02 remaining.
- Cherisier and Sconiers would combine for Delaware's final 8-2 run to get in as close as nine points (78-69) before Purdue Fort Wayne rebuilt the double-digit lead and settled the 88-74 final.
- Wilson has scored in double digits in all four games this season
- This is Cousins' second-straight game she scored in double-digits for the Blue Hens, third game this season
- This is Sconiers second game she scored in double-digits for Delaware
- This is the longest losing streak under Coach Sarah Jenkins tutelage
- The last time the Blue Hens lost a game after leading at the half was against conference foe Hampton on Mar. 4, 2023
