Women’s Basketball Return To Winning Ways To Conclude Gulf Coast Showcase Outing

ESTERO, Fla. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to winning ways after capturing a 73-66 victory over Vermont (3-4) to conclude their outing at the 2023 Clean Simple Eats Gulf Coast Showcase inside Hertz Arena Sunday morning. With the win, the Blue Hens moved to 2-3 on the young season and finished the tournament with a 1-2 mark.

First Quarter
The Blue Hens continue its road trip and travel to the nation's capital on Wednesday, Nov. 29 to face American (1-4) inside Bender Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Tara Cousins tied her career-best 22 points on another efficient shooting performance. Cousins shot 9-16 from the field and 4-7 from beyond the arc.
- Cousins was one of three Blue Hens in double figures, along with Chloe Wilson and Sydney Boone (career-high), both of whom had 17 points.
- Wilson lived on the free throw line, pouring in 11 points from the charity stripe, and finished with game highs seven rebounds and four assists.
- Boone shot 7-of-13, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range.
- Cousins, Wilson and Nakiyah Mays-Prince were ball hawks, nabbing two steals each.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 44.8 percent (26-58) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-19) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free throw line.
- The Blue & Gold finished with 12 assists, two blocks, nine steals, 12 bench points, 24 points in the paint, two fast break points, eight second-chance points off of 10 offensive rebounds and 25 points off of 18 Catamounts turnovers.
First Quarter
- The Blue Hens got out to a quick 8-4 lead thanks to baskets from four different players.
- Vermont responded with an 8-0 run of their own, but was quickly snapped by a Cousins' mid-range shot.
- Delaware finished the quarter with a 7-2 run to take a 17-13 lead into the second quarter.
- After Vermont cut the Delaware lead to 19-18 early in the second quarter.
- The Blue Hens responded with a 13-2 run of their own to extend the lead by as much as 32-20 from the 8:09 mark to the 3:57 mark.
- The run was started and capped by Wilson with tough layups and send the the 35-26 lead into the break.
- Both teams went back and forth for the first half of the third quarter with the Blue Hens having a lead as large as 47-37 with 5:02 remaining.
- However, Vermont ended the quarter on a 7-3 lead to cut Delaware's lead to 50-44 heading into the final frame.
- The Blue Hens immediately shut down the Catamounts run and took a commanding 58-46 with seven minutes left in the game.
- Wilson kickstarted and finished off the Delaware run with a free throw.
- Vermont didn't go down without a fight and scored seven straight points to cut the Blue Hens lead down to five.
- Delaware proved to be too much as a Cousins layup, and back-to-back three-pointers from Boone gave Delaware the lead for good and settled the 73-66 final.
- Over the three-game tournament, Cousins averaged 20 points, shot 53.2 percent from the field and 41.6 percent from 3-point range.
- The Blue Hens snapped the three-game skid with the victory over Vermont while extending the winning streak to five games.
