Five Double-Digit Scorers Lead As Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Longwood

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball tip-off the 2023-24 campaign Thursday evening by welcoming Longwood (0-2) for a non-conference showdown in front of the 1,115 adoring Blue Hen faithful inside the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens ran away with the 81-55 victory over the Lancers to open with a 1-0 record. Delaware has won their season opener for the fourth straight campaign.

First Quarter
The Blue Hens return to the Bob Carpenter Center and welcome in Lehigh on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Five Blue Hens were in double figures. Chloe Wilson led the way with 18 points. Ande'a Cherisier and Darrionna Howard had 13, Tara Cousins had 12 and Sydney Boone added 11.
- Wilson and Howard earned their first career double-double as Blue Hens, and we're two of three players to grab double figure rebounds. Wilson and Howard each had 12 rebounds, while Klarke Sconiers had 10 rebounds, and added nine points.
- Delaware shot 48.6 percent (34-70) from the field, 26.1 percent (6-23) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (7-14) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens led the way in assists (17-8), blocks (2-1) and points in the paint (48-22) while scoring 16 second chance points off 21 Lancer miscues.
First Quarter
- Longwood opened the scoring with 9:11 left on the clock thanks to a layup by Otaifo Esenabhalu
- 27 seconds later Tara Cousins drained a routine jumper to kickstart a Blue Hen 14-2 run over the next 5:30, 14-4. The run was highlighted by Wilson and Cousins combining for 12 points.
- The Lancers responded with three-straight triples to pull within three, 16-13, with 1:16 left in the quarter.
- The freshman Darrionna Howard grabbed her first-career offensive board and immediately put it back up to score her first-career points to put the Blue Hens back up back five points, 18-13, to close the quarter.
- Sydney Boone connected from deep a minute into the second stanza before the rookie in Cherisier got herself into the scoring column with a jumper for her first career points, pushing Delaware's lead to double-digits, 23-13.
- Longwood battled to make it a single-digit game and was able to get in as close as seven courtesy of Janay Turner's three-pointer at the 3:55 mark, 27-20
- Howard nabbed one of the Blue Hens' first half high of 10 steals and laid in two igniting a 13-7 run capped by Boone's buzzer-beating layup, extending the lead to 15 points, 42-27.
- Delaware built a 21-point cushion, thanks to Scoiners finding the close basket for two, 52-31, with 5:49 remaining.
- The Blue Hens remained in the driver's seat throughout the quarter closing with Cherisier closing out the stanza with a second-chance layup, 59-37.
- Delaware kept their foot on the gas throughout the final quarter. Mia Yanogacio connected from deep with 29 seconds remaining to extend the lead to a game-high 26 points to settle the 81-55 final.
- The Blue Hens defense was all over the place highlighted with nine steals in the first half. Last year's squad took the ball away from the Lancers 11 times total.
- Boone led the team, and set a new personal best, with four steals in the win. She was one of three Blue Hens, along with Howard (3), and Cousins (2) to have multiple steals in the game.
The Blue Hens return to the Bob Carpenter Center and welcome in Lehigh on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
