Women’s Basketball Falls To VCU

HENRICO, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened its three-game road slate Monday evening against former conference foe VCU (9-1) at a neutral site, Henrico Sports & Events Center, in Henrico, Va. The Blue Hens (4-5) dropped a 64-55 decision to the Rams, resulting in the Blue & Gold on a current two-game skid.

First Quarter: VCU 9, Delaware 8
The Blue Hens continue its road trip, this time heading to the City of Brotherly Love on Thursday, Dec 14 to face Temple inside Liacouras Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Philadelphia and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Leading the way for the Blue Hens was Tara Cousins and Rebecca Demeke.
- Cousins led the way with 15 points off 6-of-14 shooting from the field including a 3-for-9 effort from long range.
- Demeke spotted a new career high with 12 points off 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from deep. Her previous career high was 11 back on Jan. 5 against Hampton.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 36.1 percent (22-61) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-17) from beyond the arc and 62.5 percent (5-8) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens finished with six assists, six steals, 26 bench points, 20 points in the paint, 5 fast break points, six second-chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds and 16 points off of 13 Rams turnovers.
First Quarter: VCU 9, Delaware 8
- Five of UD's points came from Demeke, who went a perfect 2-for-2 from the field.
- The Blue Hens held the Rams to 22 percent shooting from the field in the quarter.
- After multiple baskets by VCU, Delaware put its foot on the gas starting the second quarter.
- The Blue Hens went on a commanding 13-0 run to take a 24-14 lead halfway through the second.
- The run was started with a Sydney Boone 3-pointer a minute and a half in, and was finished with a Demeke 3-pointer of her own.
- The Rams quickly caught backup and erased the Blue Hen lead to as little as 26-24.
- Delaware put together its best shooting quarter, 52.9 percent (9-17) from the field, 75 percent (3-4) from beyond the arc and perfection from the free throw line (2-2).
- After an early second half basket by Chloe Wilson, the Rams went on a 13-4 run to take a 40-37 lead with three and a half minutes to go.
- The Blue Hens would close the gap with a pair of Chersiser free throws and a Cousins 3-pointer.
- Boone would tie the game at 45 a piece with a mid range jumper to start the fourth quarter.
- The Rams responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead.
- UD didn't go down without a fight as Klarke Sconiers and Cousins both scored baskets to make it a 54-50 game.
- However, the Rams responded with eight straight points and would be too much for the Blue Hens to handle, settling the 64-55 final.
- The Blue Hens are on a two-game losing streak while the Rams extended their winning streak to six games.
- The Blue Hens saw its winning streak against the Rams stopped at three games.
- This is the second-straight game the Blue Hens ended up on the losing end after leading at the half.
- Darrionna Howard (seven rebounds) and Cherisier made their first ever collegiate start seeing 15 and 14 minutes of action, respectively.
- Sconiers swatted away a game-high three shots in 20 minutes off the bench while Boone pulled down a career-best seven rebounds.
