Women’s Tennis Beats Rutgers, 5-2

WILMINGTON, Del. – Delaware women's tennis (7-2) picked up its sixth-straight victory Friday afternoon with a 5-2 decision over Rutgers (8-2).

"We knew going into this match it was going to be a battle," Director of Tennis Pablo Montana said. "We came out focused and prepared and played disciplined doubles to earn the point. In singles, we did not let our feet off the gas. Kudos to Rutgers as it did not let up and it made us earn everything."

The Hens secured the doubles points with wins in the first two flights, before locking in victories in the No. 1, 2, 4, 6 singles slots.

Third-ranked doubles pair of Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Eliza Askarova move to 17-1 on the campaign with a convincing win in the top slot, while Alina Vasilenko and Isabella Montana go to 7-0 when patterned together.

The 17 wins ties the pair for ninth most in a single season in program history.

Abidullina won in straight sets and now sits at 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the top slot this season. Toni Nelson also picked up a straight-set win and advances to 11-5.

Delaware returns to action Friday, March 3 against Fairleigh Dickinson at Elkton Tennis Center.
