ELON, N.C. – Delaware men's tennis (11-6, 3-3 CAA) dropped a pair of CAA matches on Thursday to Elon (11-6, 3-0 CAA) and NC A&T (10-0, 1-0 CAA). The Phoenix won 4-2, while the Aggies took a 4-3 decision.
"We had a long grueling day of tennis starting with Elon," Assistant Coach Nate Perrone said. "They were ready and came at us with everything they had. Our guys were ready and believed they were going to win. We battled hard but came up just short. Some great wins but not enough for a win as a team against that caliber.
"The match vs. NC A& T was within a point of going either way, but sadly it did not go ours. Trying to end our trip on a win, our guys went out there in tough conditions and almost got it done. From being down and out of the match multiple times, to then coming back and being one point away. This is a heartbreaker to take as a team, but we will use it as motivation to bounce back to learn and get better."
Against the Phoenix, Delaware picked up points in the No. 2 and 4 slots as Luis Molina and Daniel Krulig snagged straight-set wins.
In a heated match against league newcomer NC A&T, the Hens went ahead with easy doubles victories.
The Aggies went up 2-1 with the first two wins in singles play, before Udayan Bhakar knotted things at two apiece with a win in the five slot. The teams traded points with the third and fourth matches splitting outcomes.
Esteban Lopez clinched the match with a three-set thriller against Molina. After Molina went ahead after the first set, Lopez pulled out a 6-4 second and 7-6 (4) third.
Delaware heads to Philadelphia on Sunday for a newly added match against Penn.
