NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's soccer program kicked off the Kelly Lawrence era with a 1-0 win against Syracuse on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Grant Stadium

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Mia Reed was credited with the decision. She had two saves in 45 minutes of game action.
Kyla Burns made her Blue Hen debut and played all 45 minutes in goal in the second half. She had one save for the half.
Burns was one of three athletes who made their debut for the Blue Hens, along with Willa Pratt, and Carly Binn.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Raychel Speicher scored the games lone goal in the eighth minute of the first half. Lea Panagiotidis received a long cross from Lauren Elwell, who then found Speciher and kicked it into the back corner of the net.
The Blue Hens held the Orange to just seven shots, and three shots on goal.

GAME NOTES

Not only is this the first win for first year head coach Lawrence, it was also the program's first ever win over a current power five opponent. The Blue Hens defeated Virginia Tech in 1994, but the program was not in the ACC during that time.
Lawrence is the first ever head coach in program history to win their first ever game as the head coach.
This was the first shutout since Oct. 9, 2022 when the Blue Hens tied Hofstra 0-0.
UD has won five straight season opener games, dating back to 2019, including three straight home opener wins.
