Field Hockey Falls 4-3 to VCU in Season Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware field hockey team dropped its first game of the 2023 season as the Blue Hens fell 4-3 to VCU on the road Friday afternoon.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Kiki Oudshoorn put the Hens on the board with the first goal of the season at the 4:19 mark.
- Julia Duffhuis knotted the game at two apiece at the 28:33 mark in the second quarter on an assist from Valentina Martorell.
- Berber Bakermans made it a one-goal game with under three minutes in the fourth on a double assist by Duffhuis and Martorell
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hens lead lasted for less than a minute as the Rams tied the game at the 5:04 mark in the first quarter.
- VCU scored its second in a row in the second quarter, but Duffhuis tied the game at the 28:33 mark for her first goal of the year.
- The Rams took a 4-3 lead after finding the back of the cage in both the third and fourth quarters.
- Bakermans cut Delaware's deficit to just one goal at the 56:10 mark, but it was not enough as the Hens fell 4-3.
GAME NOTES
- Kylie Walbert made her first start in goal with the Blue Hens as the transfer made four saves in eight attempts.
- The Hens outshot the Rams 16-10 with 11 shots on goal on the day.
UP NEXT
The Blue & Gold head to Norfolk, Va. on Sunday, Aug. 27 for a bout with No. 18 ODU set for noon.
