NEWARK, Del. – Defense reigned supreme Friday night as the University of Delaware field hockey team fell 2-1 to Monmouth University at Rullo Stadium.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS

Junior Genevieve Johnson scored Delaware's lone goal
Sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Walbert tallied nine saves
Freshman Rachael Whitehead had two shots with one on frame

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monmouth offense put the Blue Hens on their heels from the get-go as the Hawks had three shots on frame in the first period compared to just one from the Blue & Gold
In the second, Walbert continued to be a wall as she sent the game scoreless into the break
In the third, Monmouth continued to put pressure on the Hens defense, but Delaware did not let up
Forty seconds into the fourth, the Hens broke through as Johnson found the back of the Hawks cage with an unassisted goal
Less than a minute after Johnson's goal, the Hawks knotted the game at one apiece on an unassisted goal of their own from Sofia Fouces
At the 49:26 mark, Fouces broke the 1-1 tie off a corner to put Monmouth on top for good

UP NEXT
Delaware hits the road again as the Blue Hens head to Storrs, Conn. for a non-conference bout with the UConn Huskies. Game time is set for noon.
