Minicucci’s Six Total Touchdowns Leads Football Past Campbell in Home Finale

NEWARK, Del. – Nick Minicucci accounted for six total touchdowns and the University of Delaware football team scored on each of its first four possessions to defeat Campbell 41-22 on Saturday afternoon in front of 16,422 fans at Delaware Stadium. With the win, the Blue Hens move to 9-1 on the season and 6-1 in CAA play, while the Camels slip to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in conference action.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Nick Minicucci had a career day, passing for career-highs of 230 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a personal-best 78 yards and two scores.
- Marcus Yarns rushed for 134 yards, his third-consecutive 100-yard performance, and Jo'Nathan Silver added 55 yards on six carries.
- Phil Lutz caught four passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
- JoJo Bermudez had 94 all-purpose yards and caught his first touchdown pass of the season, while Jake Thaw added a scoring grab.
- Delaware finished with 529 total yards of offense, including 299 on the ground.
- Gavin Moul led the defense with seven tackles and added a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries.
- Ty Davis had a sack and two quarterback hurries as the Blue Hens tied a season-high with seven quarterback hurries.
- Nic Ware and Calson Goodwill both had their first interceptions of the season. It was Goodwill's first-career interception.
- The defense held Campbell to 327 total yards, including 60 rushing yards, while holding the Camels to 113 total yards in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware got off to a quick start as, after a fourth-down stop from the defense, a 35-yard run by Yarns set up a six-yard scoring run by Minicucci.
- Minicucci found Lutz for a 33-yard score on UD's next possession to extend the lead to 12-0.
- Campbell responded with a long touchdown to make it a 12-6 game after the opening quarter.
- A 22-yard pass to Ja'Carree Kelly and long runs by Yarns, Minicucci and Bermudez drove the Hens right back down the field before Lutz caught his second touchdown pass. Minicucci connected with Max Patterson for the 2-point conversion to give UD a 20-6 lead.
- Another long pass by the Camels cut the lead to 20-13 before Minicucci dove over the goal line on a fourth-and-two to regain the two-score advantage. Silver ran for 42 yards on the drive.
- A Campbell field goal right before halftime made it a 27-16 score at the break. The Camels had the only score of the third quarter to make it a 27-22 game.
- Minicucci used his legs to drive down the field to start the fourth quarter, rushing four times for 56 yards before finding Thaw in the back corner of the end zone.
- Minicucci finished his strong day with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Bermudez midway through the quarter to complete the scoring.
GAME NOTES
- Prior to the game, the Blue Hens celebrated the program's 22 seniors.
- Minicucci became the first Delaware quarterback to rush for multiple touchdowns since Joe Walker ran for a pair of score against James Madison in 2015.
- Lutz became the fifth Blue Hen all-time to reach 10 touchdown receptions, and first since Thyrick Pitts in 2022.
- Lutz is now tied for second all-time with 11 touchdown catches this season. He is tied with James Anderson (1987) and one behind Pat Walker (1969).
- Yarns' 134-yard performance was his third-straight 100-yard game, fourth of the season and the eighth of his career.
- He is the first Blue Hen since Dejoun Lee in 2021 to rush for 100 yards in three-consecutive games.
- Saturday was the third time this season the Blue Hens surpassed 500 yards of total offense and fourth time rushing for more than 200 yards.
UP NEXT
The Blue Hens will close out the 2024 season next weekend at Villanova in the annual Battle of the Blue. It will be Delaware's final game as an FCS member. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FloFootball.
