Volleyball Defeated in CAA Tournament Championship Match to Charleston

TOWSON, Md. - No. 2 seed University of Delaware volleyball was defeated by No. 1 Charleston in five sets (21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 3-15) in the Championship Match of the CAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23 at SECU Arena. The Blue Hens finish the season with an overall record of 20-7.Â
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kirah Johnson had a match-best 21 kills and hit .286 with four blocks.
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss recorded 13 kills with a .333 hitting percentage and three blocks.
- Lily Rogers had 43 assists, three aces, three kills, and seven digs.
- Savannah Seemans contributed seven kills, 12 digs, and two blocks.
- Emily Chrysogelos had seven kills and an ace.Â
- Cadence Nguyen posted a match-high 24 digs.
- Hannah Wright finished with 10 digs and two aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Delaware opened strong, racing to a 6-1 lead. Charleston cut the deficit to 7-5, but an ace by Johnson, two kills from Whitfield-Moss, and a kill by Gillens extended UD's lead to seven.
- Charleston took its first lead at 20-19 and secured the set by scoring the final three points.Â
- Nguyen had seven digs in the set.Â
SET TWO
- Delaware called a timeout after Charleston took a 7-3 lead. UD responded with five-straight points, highlighted by two aces from Rogers and two kills from Chrysogelos, to take the lead.Â
- Charleston went back up 14-12, and eventually 17-15. Delaware scored six-straight points to take a 24-19 lead. Johnson recorded three kills and a block during the run before the Blue Hens clinched the set.Â
- Johnson had eight kills in the set while hitting .500, and Rogers had 11 assists. Delaware hit .378 as a team in the second.Â
SET THREE
- The set remained tight, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead until Charleston pulled ahead 15-12.
- Delaware got back on track by scoring four of the next five points to tie the score at 16. Charleston scored the set's last five points and took a 2-1 lead.
- Whitfield-Moss and Johnson each had five kills in the set, and Rogers had 11 assists. Nguyen had eight digs.Â
SET FOUR
- Delaware erupted with a 5-0 run to begin the set and scored seven of the first eight points. Wright had two aces in the stretch and Johnson had three kills. A 4-0 run pushed Delaware's lead to 12-4.Â
- UD closed out the set with three points in a row to force a fifth set.Â
- Chrysogelos had five kills in the set, and Rogers had 12 assists.Â
SET FIVE
- Â Charleston scored 12 of the final 13 points of the set and match.
MATCH NOTES
- Johnson tied a Delaware CAA Championship Match record with 21 kills - also done by Katie Dennehy in 2008 and 2010. Her 21 kills was also her career-high in a game.Â
- Johnson ended her career with a .306 hitting percentage, the fifth-best in program history.
- Seemans concluded her career having played in every set of every match. She played in all 460 possible sets of her five-year career.Â
- Nugyen tied her career high with 24 digs, previously achieved in the season opener against Michigan on Aug. 30. Her 24 digs were the second-most by a Delaware player in a CAA Tournament match, behind Stephanie Barry's 25 in 2007.
- Wright ended her career with recording an ace in three-straight games, including three total aces in her two CAA Tournament matches.Â
- Chrysogelos tied her career-high in kills with seven, last done on Oct. 13 against William & Mary.Â
- Rogers and Johnson were named CAA All-Tournament recipients.Â
- Delaware's .741 winning percentage this season was the sixth best in program history. It's the fourth time Delaware has recorded at least a .700 winning percentage in back-to-back seasons in program history (also done from 2009-2010, 2006-2007, and 1976-1977.Â
