NEW ORLEANS – The University of Delaware women's basketball team tipped off the 2024 Big Easy Classic - Fleur de Lis Tournament on Friday evening, facing Tarleton State at the Alario Center in Westwego, La. The Blue Hens (1-5) fell to the Texans (4-3) in a 54-40 contest.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Tara Cousins led Delaware with 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Ande'a Cherisier followed closely with 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Delaware shot 32.7% (16-49) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) from beyond the arc, and 57.1% (4-7) from the free-throw line.
The Blue Hens capitalized with 16 bench points, 13 assists, and nine steals in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: Delaware 15, Tarleton State 13

After Tarleton State briefly led 3-1, Ella Wanzer scored five straight points to give Delaware an early 6-3 advantage with 8:10 remaining.
The Texans countered, taking a five-point lead on a Jakoriah Long three-pointer at the 4:28 mark.
Cherisier fueled a late surge, scoring six points during Delaware's 9-2 run to close the quarter with a 15-13 lead.

Second Quarter: Tarleton State 26, Delaware 24

Tarleton State opened the quarter with five unanswered points to take an 18-15 lead.
Cousins answered with a three-pointer, sparking a 7-0 Delaware run to regain a 22-18 advantage.
The Texans responded with a 7-0 run of their own to go up 26-22, but Cousins closed the gap by sinking two free throws, leaving the Blue Hens down 26-24 at halftime.

Third Quarter: Tarleton State 44, Delaware 31

Delaware tied the game at 26-all when Jiya Perry connected with Wanzer for an easy layup 30 seconds into the half.
However, Tarleton State took control with an 18-5 run over the final 7:40 of the quarter, extending its lead to 44-31.

Fourth Quarter: Tarleton State 54, Delaware 40

Alieghya Bartholomew opened the quarter with a jumper to trim the deficit to 44-33, but the Texans maintained their momentum.
The Texans' lead grew to a game-high 16 points with 3:12 left on the clock.
Cousins scored Delaware's final four points as Tarleton State secured the 54-40 victory.

GAME NOTES

This matchup marked the first meeting between Delaware and Tarleton State, giving the Texans a 1-0 lead in the all-time series.
