Women’s Basketball Battles William & Mary

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball welcomed William & Mary inside the Bob Carpenter Center Friday evening as part of the Black History Month Legacy Game and Unity Night. The Blue Hens (8-14, 4-6 CAA) came up short by a score of 62-58 to the Tribe (11-10, 7-3 CAAA). The Tribe completed the series sweep against the Blue Hens.

First Quarter: William & Mary 17, Delaware 12
GAME NOTES
The Blue Hens head up to West Long Branch, N.J. on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 11 to face the defending CAA champions Monmouth inside OceanFirst Bank Center. Opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast live simultaneously on FloHoops, SNY and NBC Philadelphia.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue Hens leading scorer was Tara Cousins with nine points (4-of-12 FG, 1-of-1 FT).
- Chloe Wilson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while Sydney Boone led the team in assists with three.
- Delaware finished the evening shooting 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field, 13.6 percent (3-of-22) from 3-point range, and 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens had 33 rebounds, nine steals, 26 bench points, and scored 11 points off 21 Tribe turnovers.
First Quarter: William & Mary 17, Delaware 12
- After William & Mary opened the game with a second chance basket, Grace Sundback gave the Blue Hens the early 3-2 lead at the 8:43 mark.
- The Tribe retook the lead a minute later, and would not relinquish it for the rest of the quarter.
- W&M were up by as much as 13-7 and took a 17-12 lead into the quarter break.
- William & Mary extended their lead to 21-16 with 8:52 remaining in the quarter.
- Delaware responded with stifling defense as the Tribe remained scoreless for nearly five minutes.
- During the five-minute scoreless stretch, the Blue Hens cut the lead down to 21-20.
- Delaware fought their way back and eventually took a 29-28 lead as Boone hit a mid-range jumper as time expired heading into the break.
- After the Tribe scored the first two baskets of the quarter, a Boone pull-up jumper and a Sundback freebie made it a 32-all game with 7:17 to play.
- From the 6:42 mark to 28 seconds, William & Mary went on a 16-5 run to give them a 48-37 lead.
- Cousins finished the quarter off with her routine jumper to cut the Tribe lead down to single digits at 48-39 going into the final frame.
- The Blue Hens started the final period strong, scoring the first six points of the quarter to cut the Tribe lead down to 48-45.
- After William & Mary responded with a quick 5-0 run, Delaware fought their way back and eventually tied the game 56 with 2:14 remaining in the game.
- After Tribe responded with a second chance basket, Mays-Prince tied the game with a layup with 46 seconds left in the quarter (58-all).
- However, Cassidy Geddes made the go-ahead tripler 10 seconds later to secure Willaim & Mary's 62-58 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Geddes paced William & Mary with 20 points, four rebounds and two steals. Nylah Young followed with 16 points and two steals before fouling out of the game while Anahi-Lee Cauley chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
- William & Mary finished the evening shooting 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field, 33.3 percent (8-24) from the three-point line and 66.7 percent (6-9) from the free throw line.
- Wilson has now grabbed double-digit rebounds in six contests this season, including three of the last four games.
- Delaware still owns the series record at 32-12, and the Tribes won the last two against the Blue Hens.
- This is the first game this season that at least one Blue Hen has not scored in double-digits
