Softball Picks Up 12th Consecutive Win, Sweeps Doubleheader From Drexel

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball swept a doubleheader from Drexel, 5-0 and 5-4, to win their 12th consecutive game and ninth straight CAA game on Friday, March 29, 2024. Head coach Jen Steele recorded her 300th career win during game one, and Emily Winburn picked up her 63rd career win, tying the all-time program record. Julz Garber also recorded the 150th hit of her career.Â

- Winburn pitched a shutout, striking out seven and allowing just two hits and zero walks.Â
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and RBI.Â
- Julz Garber went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
- Katie Scheivert went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.Â
- Julia Boyet went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk.Â
- Morgan Hess went 1-for-2 with an RBI.Â
- Gianna Costaro and Maddie Fife both had an RBI and a walk.
- Boyet went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Winburn struck out two hitters each in the first and second innings, allowing just one hit. Delaware started the scoring in the bottom of the second after Boyet walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Scheivert.Â
- Winburn induced three groundouts in the third. Garber helped manufacture a run in the bottom half with a bunt single, a stolen base, advancing to third on an error, and scoring on a double by Shaffer.Â
- Winburn stranded a runner on second in the fourth with a strikeout and two groundouts.Â
- Fife scored Boyet with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.Â
- Two more groundouts and a strikeout ended the top of the fifth inning. Delaware scored for the fourth straight inning in the bottom of the fifth after a bases-loaded walk by Costaro and a sacrifice fly by Hess.Â
- Winburn finished the game by setting the side down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, clinching a 5-0 Delaware win.Â
- Fife caught a runner stealing second base in the top of the first. Delaware's offense put up a crooked number in the bottom half after Garber and Blantz both reached base to start the game. Shaffer scored Garber on a sacrifice fly, Costaro walked, Boyet tripled home two runs, and Hess had a sacrifice fly to give Delaware a 4-0 lead.
- Drexel scored two in the second inning.
- Blantz tripled and scored on a Shaffer single to give Delaware a 5-2 lead.Â
- Hess stranded a leadoff double with two groundouts and a popup. She then pitched a 1-2-3 fourth and fifth inning.
- Drexel put two runners on with one out in the sixth, but Hess escaped unscathed.Â
- After two runners reached base to start the seventh and a run scored, Winburn came on to secure the save. An error brought home another run, but Winburn struckout the final batter finish off a one-run win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Winburn recorded her 63rd career win, tying Carolynn Sloat for most in program history.Â
- Winburn also recorded the fourth save of the season and 11th of her career, extending her career program record.Â
- Winburn pitched her eighth complete game and third shutout of the season, and 44th complete game and 17th shutout of her career.Â
- Garber extended her career-long hit streak to 11. She has also recorded multiple hits in four straight games and has 13 multi-hit games this season.Â
- Garber is four games shy of tying the longest hitting streak in Delaware history - 15 by Allison Borchers in 2006.Â
- Garber became the 20th player in Delaware history with at least 150 career hits.Â
- Shaffer has 11 multi-hit games this season.Â
- Boyet has eight multi-RBI games this season.
- Hess has recorded an RBI in five straight games.Â
- Steele recorded her 300th and 301st victories of her career. She has 147 of those wins at Delaware.Â
- Delaware is currently on a 12-game win streak and have won nine-straight CAA games. They are one win shy of tying their longest win streak in program history (13 in 2000) and longest conference win streak in program history (10 in 2023).Â
- Delaware's 12-game win streak is currently the fifth longest in all of Division I.Â
