NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware's 2023 men's soccer team finished 9-4-6, earning a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament appearance, in head coach Tommy McMenemy's second season.
"The boys worked incredibly hard over the summer to return to campus ready to compete, and so we were happy for them that they were able to enjoy a winning season," McMenemy said.
The Blue Hens opened the season with a 3-2 win against Power 5 conference champion, Rutgers. They would also enjoy their third win in team history against a nationally ranked opponent, defeating 18th ranked Hofstra, 2-1.
The Hens had several players recognized by the CAA for their play. Five players received conference honors, including a 1st team nod for Sam Donnellan, 2nd team honors for Richard Monath, Carlos Fernandez, and T.J. Hastings, while Jan Schroder would cap it off with an All Rookie Team. Monath in addition earned CAA Rookie of the Year, while he and Hastings joined Schroder on the All Rookie Team.
Donnellan became the first double digit goal scorer for the Hens since 2016, finishing with 10 after scoring eight the previous year during his freshman season. He would also lead the team in points with 24, followed by Fernandez with 20. Monath and Schroder would tie for most assists with six.
The Hens would also drop only four games, the least amount of losses for the squad since 1976, and the least in program history when playing a season of 15 games or more. Their .632 winning percentage marked the Hens first winning season since 2016. They would also receive national attention, with three players being separately awarded national team of the week honors.
The Hens strong season earned them a spot in the CAA Tournament where they would continue their winning ways in the first round against Drexel, defeating the Dragons 2-2 (4-2 PKs). The Hens would eventually fall to top-seeded Hofstra in the semifinals.
"This group of student-athletes is hungry to compete for a championship, so we have work to do to improve on both sides of the ball in the spring season, and must avoid complacency," McMenemy said. "We can't wait to get started."
