Softball Sets Single-Season Wins And Record For Most CAA Wins, Winburn Sets Single Season Wins Record In Victories Over Towson

TOWSON, Md. - University of Delaware's softball program finished off a weekend sweep of Towson and recorded their 37th win of the season, setting a new program record, and their 21st CAA win, setting a new conference record. Emily Winburn set a new record for most wins in a single season with her 21st after Delaware defeated Towson, 4-1, during the resumption of Saturday's game. The Blue Hens won in five innings in Sunday's originally scheduled game, 10-1.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, APRIL 27
- Winburn pitched all seven innings and allowed just one run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.Â
- Chloe Blantz went 1-for-3 with a three-run double and a walk.
- Julia Boyet and Sydney Shaffer went 1-for-3 with walks. Shaffer scored two runs and Shaffer scored one.
- Gianna Costaro went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored, and RBI.Â
- Morgan Hess walked twice.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS, APRIL 28
- Hess pitched all five innings and allowed just a run and a walk with three strikeouts. She also hit a solo home run.Â
- Katie Scheivert went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
- Maddie Fife went 2-for-2.Â
- Boyet went 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
- Julz Garber went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
- Jenna Giattino had a pinch-hit two-run single.Â
- Costaro went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
- Blantz scored a run, drove in a run, and walked once.
- Lillie Scheivert scored a run and walked.
HOW IT HAPPENED, APRIL 27
- Winburn escaped a first and second jam in the first inning, then pitched a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
- Delaware broke free with two outs in the third inning. A walk by Boyet, a single by Shaffer, and a hit by pitch by Costaro loaded the bases for Blantz, who drove in all three runners with a double to put Delaware up 3-0. The game was then suspended due to rain.
- Winburn threw a scoreless third inning as play resumed, then worked around a run scored by Towson in the fourth with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.Â
- Shaffer drew a one-out walk in the fifth and scored all the way from first base on a double by Costaro to put Delaware up 4-1.
- Winburn pitched a perfect bottom of the fifth, and ended a 1-2-3 sixth with a strikeout. She threw a hitless seventh inning to seal the win.Â
- Delaware scored a pair of runs in the first inning on three straight singles to lead off the game by Garber, Katie Scheivert, and Boyet and an RBI groundout by Blantz.
- Hess allowed just a two-out single in a scoreless first.
- Towson scored a run in the second, but Hess limited the damage by escaping a bases-loaded jam. She then pitched a perfect third inning.
- Delaware erupted for eight runs in the fourth, jump-started by a leadoff home run by Hess. Lillie Scheivert walked, then three straight singles by Fife, Garber and Katie Scheivert extended the lead to 5-1. A squeeze bunt by Boyet scored Boyet, then Katie Scheivert scored on a wild pitch. Costaro brought in Boyet with an RBI single. Giattino capped the inning off with a two-run single off the bench to put Delaware ahead 10-1.Â
- Two strikeouts and a popup finished off the fourth for Hess.
- Hess then pitched a perfect fifth inning to finish off a sweep.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware recorded their 37th and 38th wins of the season, surpassing the program record of 36 set in 2000.Â
- Delaware also became the first team in CAA history to win 21 conference games.Â
- Delaware ended the regular season with a road record of 12-5.Â
- Winburn won her 21st game of the season, setting a new Delaware single-season record. She surpassed Susan Dogan's 20 in 2000.
- Winburn's complete game was her 17th of the season, the 53rd of her career, and her 12th in her last 13 games she has started. She has a 1.35 ERA since March 3 and a 0.91 ERA since March 20.Â
- Boyet extended her hitting streak to nine games, the second best by a Delaware player this season (Garber, 11). She has nine multi-hit games during the streak and is hitting .536/.581/.786 during the streak and .462/.512/.718 since April 9.
- Hess won her 11th straight decision.  She has a 1.47 ERA since Feb. 24 in 90.1 innings pitched.Â
- Garber recorded her 19th multi-hit game of the season. She also stole her 15th straight base since her last caught stealing.Â
- Katie Scheivert has driven in at least two runs in three of her last six games. She also hit a home run in both of her games started in the circle this weekend. She has six hits in her last 12 at bats with three extra base hits since Sunday.Â
- Giattino's RBIs were her first as a pinch hitter in her career.Â
- Olivia Marinucci made her return to game action as a pinch hitter, her first appearance since March 22, 2023.Â
