Delaware Athletics Commemorates Juneteenth
6/19/2024 10:00:00 AM | Delaware Athletics
For generations, Black Americans have commemorated the end of one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history with joyous parades, street festivals, musical performances, and cookouts. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill passed by Congress to designate Juneteenth as a federal holiday, cementing its importance in the national consciousness.
Delaware Athletics stands in solidarity with the African American community, honoring the historical significance of Juneteenth and recognizing the ongoing journey towards true equality and justice for all. This year, we are proud to celebrate under the theme of "Unifying the 302," reflecting on what Juneteenth means to our community.
Juneteenth exemplifies my ancestors' enduring strength, from the trials of the Middle Passage to the inspiring spirit of freedom that empowers me, internally, to pursue my dreams and shape my future despite opposition. - James Coleman, Senior Associate AD, DEI
To me, Juneteenth is recognizing the parts of American history that aren't always told. It is reconciling with the hard truths, while allowing Black Americans the space and opportunity to memorialize and celebrate the strength of their ancestors. - Tara Cousins, Women's Basketball
Juneteenth to me means freedom. Juneteenth is more than just a historical milestone. It's a celebration of culture, community and freedom. It is a call to action reminding me of where I've come from and it inspires me to shape a future of equality and justice. - Anna Logan Gillen, Volleyball
Juneteenth represents the beginning of change for a group of people in America. The day marks the start of African Americans being equals in American society. To me, Juneteenth is a day that laid the foundation for so many amazing people to reach for their wildest dreams and ambitions by becoming free American citizens. - Ethan Saunders, Football
Juneteenth holds deep personal significance as it marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It symbolizes the enduring quest for freedom, equality, and justice. Juneteenth is a poignant tribute to the resilience of a community that endured centuries of oppression, yet remained steadfast in their pursuit of liberty. It's a time to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for emancipation and to contemplate the ongoing journey towards genuine equality for all. Juneteenth is not just a historical event, but a reminder of our collective responsibility to dismantle systemic injustices and create a more inclusive society where every individual can thrive. - Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss, Volleyball
Juneteenth serves as a reminder that our differences make us stronger, and our unity makes us unstoppable. To me, the legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. It is another opportunity where we can highlight and reflect on how we have fought through adversity. As time accrues, the struggles of the foundation will be transformed into a fruitful future. - Quincy Watson, Football
