NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware football team had a pair of student-athletes named to the 2024 CAA Football Preseason All-Conference Team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Running back Marcus Yarns and offensive lineman Fintan Brose were both selected via a vote by the conference's head coaches. Additionally, wide receiver and kick returner JoJo Bermudez, punter Josh Cupitt and defensive back Tyron Herring all earned preseason honorable mention honors.
Already named a preseason All-American by FCS Football Central, Yarns is coming off a breakout 2023 season that saw him earn All-CAA Second Team and FCS Football Central All-American Third Team recognition. He led Delaware with 939 rushing yards and ranked fourth in the nation with 6.90 yards per carry and had four games with at least 100 yards rushing. Yarns accounted for 1,250 total all-purpose yards as he also caught 24 passes for 311 yards. Yarns ranked second in the country with 18 total touchdowns on the season, and fourth with 15 rushing scores which ranked ninth in Delaware's single-season history.
Brose has been named to the All-CAA Third Team in each of the last two seasons, his first two on the offensive line after transitioning from the defensive side of the ball. He was a key part of UD's front that helped lead a rushing attack that averaged 160.2 yards/game, an improvement of 16.8 yards/game.
Bermudez was a dynamic threat in Delaware's kickoff return, ranking fourth in the CAA with an average of 27.7 yards on 14 returns. He also had 25 receptions for 277 yards and caught a touchdown pass against Duquesne. Bermudez had three games with at least 100 all-purpose yards, including a season-high 155 yards with 103 kickoff return yards against Elon.
Cupitt is entering his first season in the Blue & Gold after transferring from Towson. Last season, he earned All-CAA Honorable Mention honors as he led the CAA and ranked third in the country with an average of 44.9 yards per punt. He had had five punts over 50 yards and landed 10 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line.
Herring received All-CAA Honorable Mention recognition in his first season at Delaware in 2023. He played in 12 of UD's 13 games and ranked among the team leaders with 42 tackles while tying for the team lead with three interceptions. He also added five pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Herring recorded six tackles and an interception against Montana in the second round of the FCS Championship.
In the 2024 CAA Predicted Order of Finish, the Blue Hens were selected to finish fifth in the conference, receiving three first-place votes and 163 points. Villanova was picked to finish first ahead of Richmond, UAlbany and William & Mary.
The Blue Hens will open the 2024 season on Thursday, August 29 against Bryant at Delaware Stadium. Tickets for the 2024 season are on sale now with fans able to purchase season tickets, partial plan packages and single game tickets for all seven of Delaware's home games.
