RICHMOND, Va. – University of Delaware men's soccer has been voted third in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Poll and four student-athletes have earned preseason recognition, the league announced Wednesday.
Sam Donnellan and Rich Monath were named to the 2024 Preseason All-CAA Men's Soccer Team with Carlos Fernandez and Jan Schroeder being featured on the honorable mention list.
In Delaware's second season under head coach Tommy McMenemy, the team finished 9-4-6 and 3-2-3 in league play to qualify for the CAA Tournament. The Hens picked up a first-round win over Drexel to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2016. During the campaign, UD tallied a ranked win over Hofstra and downed defending B1G Champions Rutgers.
Donnellan has made his mark on the program through his two seasons as a Blue Hen. During the 2023 campaign, he was named to the All-CAA First Team roster. He ranked no. 75 on Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Senior Midseason List while leading his team in goals and points. Donnellan ranked 33rd in the country in total goals and 36th in total points, while also finishing second in the conference for shot accuracy.
Monath nabbed many accolades during his rookie season with the Hens. He was awarded CAA Rookie of the Year while also being selected for the CAA All-Rookie Team and All-CAA Second Team. Monath picked up two separate top 50 rankings on Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Freshmen list. He wrapped up his season sixth in the conference in assists, and eighth in the conference in assists per game.
Fernandez returns this season for his final year. He led the team in game winning goals and ranked fifth in the conference in total points. Fernandez was an All-CAA Second Team selection.
