NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Marist in straight sets (25-10, 25-13, 25-15) in its home opener on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024. Delaware played in front of 477 fans, their second highest attended home opener in program history.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Anna Logan Gillens had 11 kills and hit .500 with two blocks.
Kirah Johnson recorded seven kills, hit .364, had five aces, and had three blocks.
Savannah Seemans had seven kills, hit .357, recorded seven digs, and had two aces.
Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had 11 kills, hit .364, recorded five aces, and had three blocks.
Lily Rogers recorded 29 assists, three kills, and four blocks.
Cadence Nguyen had seven digs.
Dylan Norris had four kills.
Hannah Wright had three digs and an ace.
Taylor Holly had an ace and two digs in her home debut.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET

Delaware took command of the first set right away, going up 7-0 and 11-1 right away. Seemans had two aces during Delaware's first seven points, and Johnson had three straight aces to go up 11-1.
Delaware used a 4-0 run to go ahead 19-6, and another 4-0 run on kills by Gillens and another ace by Johnson to lead 24-8 before winning 25-10.
Delaware hit .438 in the set and held Marist to a .062 hitting percentage. Gillens had four kills.

SECOND SET

Delaware again took the lead right away in the second, as Johnson recorded three kills and Gillens recorded two to go up 6-1. Johnson and Rogers also had a block.
Four-straight points gave Delaware a 14-8 lead after another block from Rogers and Johnson. The Blue Hens scored seven of the next eight points to lead 22-11. Whitfield-Moss and Seemans closed the set out with back-to-back kills.
Gillens and Johnson both had four kills in the second, and Rogers had 14 assists. Delaware hit .682 and held Marist to a -136 hitting percentage.

THIRD SET

An ace by Holly and two-straight kills by Norris and Seemans put Delaware ahead 9-5.
The Blue Hens scored six straight to pull away and lead 19-10. Kills by Gillens, Whitfield-Moss and Johnson and an ace by Wright finished off the game.

MATCH NOTES

Delaware has won seven straight home games dating back to last season. They have also won four straight home openers dating back to 2021.
Rogers is at 200 assists for the season and 952 for her career.
Seemans is at 915 career kills and 168 career aces.
Johnson had recorded at least three blocks in five of her six matches this season. She has 337 for her career.
Johnson's five aces were a new career-high and the most for a Delaware player this season.
Gillens' became the first Delaware player with at least 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage this season. Madelyn Grunza was the last to do it in 2023 against N.C. A&T on Nov. 5.
Delaware's .429 hitting percentage was their highest since hitting .476 on Nov. 8, 2019 against William & Mary.
Marist's -.031 hitting percentage was the lowest by a Delaware opponent since they held Maryland Eastern-Shore to a -.056 hitting percentage on Sept. 4, 2021.
Tonight's attendance of 477 was Delaware's most for a home opener since having 514 against Miami on Sept. 16, 2016.
