Late Goal Leads Women's Soccer to CAA Win Over Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. – A late goal from Maggie Groh propels the University of Delaware women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Hofstra in its first Coastal Athletic Association game of the season on Sunday at Grant Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Hens overall record improves to 3-4-2.

"It was nice to start conference play off with a win and with a great mentality to find a way to get the win," head coach Kelly Lawrence said. "We do believe we can play much better than we did today but we're happy to get the three points and protect Grant Stadium. Our focus quickly shifts to our next opponent and put a 90 minute performance in on the road."
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- In the first half, Ava Sallee scored her first goal in her collegiate career.
- Groh's goal in the second half was her second in as many games, and her first game winning goal of her career.
- In net was Kyla Burns. She collected four saves and allowed one goal on the day.
- Offensively, the Blue Hens had nine shots to Hofstra's five. Both teams had five shots on goal
- Sallee's goal came in the 26th minute of the first half. The ball bounced off multiple players on both sides. Sallee found the ball in front of the goalkeeper box and scored in the bottom right part of the net.
- Groh's game winning goal came in the 82nd minute. After multiple blocked shots, Groh earned possession of the ball, fended off Hofstra defenders turned around and kicked the ball in the top left part of the net for the goal.
- Today's win was the first time UD defeated the Pride since Sept. 25, 2016 at Grant Stadium, also by a score of 2-1.
- UD has outscored its opponents 6-1 over the last two games, and 8-2 in the month of September.
UD hits the road and takes on Hampton on Thursday, Sept. 26.
