Field Hockey Defeats Drexel in Hard-fought Road Contest

PHILADELPHIA - University of Delaware field hockey picked up its second win of the weekend, defeating the Drexel Dragons 2-1.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTSÂ
- Iris Bekker and Linde van Leeuwen notched goals for the Fightin' Blue Hens in the second quarter, giving them all the scoring they needed to secure the victory.
- Kristi Merashoff picked up the win in the cage, saving six shots, including a penalty stroke. This was her first career victory over the Dragons after facing them multiple times as a member of Northeastern.
- Kate Fiest and Sarah Rigual picked up assists on van Leeuwen's goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 21st minute, the Hens picked up three-consecutive penalty corner opportunities. On the final one, Bekker registered her sixth goal of the season on a sweep from the top of the circle.
- Just four minutes later, van Leeuwen got her chance on a penalty corner, skipping one in off of the Dragons' goalkeeper.
- To start the third stanza, Drexel earned a penalty stroke opportunity, which was thwarted by Merashoff. The save was the goalkeepers third of the season against penalty strokes.
- With eight minutes remaining, Drexel pulled their goalie, initially putting them at even-strength. Delaware fended off all of the Dragons' opportunities, even when DU went up an attacker.
GAME NOTES
- Fiest extended her Mountain Pacific Sports Federation lead in assists with her one to Bekker today, giving her six on the year.
- Ashlee Bucksar made her first collegiate appearance in the contest.
- Delaware moves to 34-10 all-time against Drexel.
