NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware Athletics, Community and Campus Recreation (DACCR), in partnership with the Center for Global Programs and Services (CGPS) and the English Language Institute (ELI), recently hosted Football 101, a unique event designed to introduce international students to Blue Hen Athletics and the traditions of American football.
More than 40 international students participated in the program, which provided a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a Delaware student-athlete. The group toured the Bob Carpenter Center, Delaware Stadium, and the Whitney Athletic Center before gathering in the Whitney Club for light refreshments and an interactive introduction to the sport. Students had the opportunity to try on gear worn by football student-athletes – including helmets, jerseys, and gloves – and learn more about the game of football.
"We toured the stadiums and facilities, enjoyed a panel with football players who shared their lives as student-athletes, and even got to try on Blue Hen gear," Timur Parin, a senior from Germany said. "By the end, we all started feeling the UD spirit and are now looking forward to the games."
The event concluded with a panel featuring Delaware football student-athletes Nick Laboy, Nate Reed, Ethan Saunders, and Riley Trujillo. The players shared their personal journeys in the sport, reflected on their experiences at UD, and answered questions from the attendees. To cap off the day, each student received a Blue Hens t-shirt to show their pride and wear at future athletic events.
"Football 101 gave international students a fun introduction to Blue Hen Athletics while also giving our student-athletes a chance to share their experiences in a meaningful way," Associate Director of Marketing & Engagement Austin Van Treuren said.
With strong turnout and enthusiastic participation, Football 101 was a resounding success. Plans are already underway to host the event again next year, continuing to strengthen connections between Delaware Athletics and the international student community on campus.
"It was wonderful to see the students so engaged with the football players and have the opportunity to ask insightful questions. They especially enjoyed trying on the football gear and taking pictures with the players. I even got to ask my own questions," Program Coordinator with the Center for Global Programs and Services Moraa Andima said.
