Women’s Basketball Fails to Complete Comeback Against George Washington

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team's comeback attempt against George Washington fell short, losing 63-59 Wednesday night inside the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens drop to 5-3, while the Revolutionaries improve to 6-5.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kailah Correa tallied her seventh-career double-digit point game, recording a team-best 18 points on 7-of-11 from the floor to go with four assists and three rebounds.
- Trinity Vance scored 10 points, marking the seventh time this season she's scored in double figures.
- Ande'a Cherisier dropped 11 points going 5-for-9 from the field with five rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Correa made the first basket of the game, GW went on a 9-0 run to jump out to a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter. UD followed it up with five-straight points to eat into the visiting team's lead. George Washington led 11-7 with 3:40 left in the first quarter at the game's initial media stoppage. The Revolutionaries took an 18-13 advantage into the second frame.
- GW's lead grew to double-digits in the first five minutes of the second quarter, holding the Blue Hens scoreless for over three minutes. The Revolutionaries held a 14-point lead at the second quarter media stoppage. Delaware nearly cut that deficit in half to close out the quarter, trailing 29-21 at the break.
- At the third quarter media timeout, the Blue Hens trailed 42-29, going 3:01 without a field goal heading into the stoppage. The Blue & Gold ended the quarter on a 10-0 run, capped off by a buzzer-beating and-one layup by Arantxa Portalez to make it only a five-point game heading into the fourth.
- The Revolutionaries held a 51-43 advantage with 6:33 remaining in regulation. A 6-0 run by UD led to the Hens only trailing by four. Delaware called timeout with 1:16 left down 60-55. A pair of free throws made by Correa with 32 seconds left trimmed it to a three-point GW lead. The Revolutionaries made 1-of-2 from the line with 22 ticks left, leaving a 61-57 advantage for the visitors. Cherisier got to the bucket for two with 11.8 seconds left, making it a two-point game. George Washington went back to the line with nine seconds left, making both to bump the lead back up to four where it stood until the end.
GAME NOTES
- After a career-high 14 rebounds last game, Portalez made her second-career start.
