Wanzer Scores 1,000th-Career Point as Women’s Basketball Advances to Hawk Classic Championship with 75-56 Win Over Akron

PHILADELPHIA –Ella Wanzer scored her 1000th-career point as the University of Delaware women's basketball team advanced to the Hawk Classic Championship, defeating Akron 75-56 in the semifinal round. The Fightin' Blue Hens rise to 6-4, while the Zips drop to 2-9. The Blue & Gold will take on the host, Saint Joseph's, at 2 p.m. in the title game on Sunday.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- UD shot 55-percent from three in the first half, while shooting 45.5 percent from three for the game, a season best for the Hens.
- Wanzer scored a season-high 25 points, the most by a Blue Hen this year, on 7-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. The seven threes are the most under head coach Sarah Jenkins and tied for the second-most triples in program history, matching Elena Delle Donne in 2010. It was the Buffalo, N.Y. native's 11th-career 20-point game.
- Kailah Correa scored 18 points, putting her in double figures for the eighth time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hens scored the first five points of the game thanks to a Correa three and Safi Kolliegbo layup in the first minute. At the game's initial media timeout, Delaware led 15-11 with 3:39 left in the first. UD led 18-15 at the conclusion of the first frame.
- Akron took its first lead of the contest with six minutes to go in the half, 22-20. The lead lasted less than a minute as Ande'a Cherisier got three points the hard way to put the Blue & Gold back in front. Delaware held a 26-22 advantage with 4:27 left in the half before taking a 32-27 lead into the halftime locker room.
- At the first media stoppage of the second half, the Blue Hens held a 40-39 lead with 4:31 remaining in the stanza. UD used an 8-2 run to lead 48-41 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. At the end of the third frame, the Blue & Gold held a 51-45 advantage.
- A Wanzer three led to an Akron timeout with 5:51 left in the game as the Hens took an 11-point lead, their largest of the game to that point. The lead for the Hens ballooned to 21 points as they held on for the convincing victory.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware moves to 38-6 under Jenkins when leading after three quarters.
- Kolliegbo picked up a season-high five assists in the contest.

The Fightin' Blue Hens will play Saint Joseph's in the championship of the Hawk Classic on Sunday, December 21. The game will be at 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
