Women’s Basketball Falls in Hawk Classic Championship to Saint Joseph’s, Wanzer Earns All-Tournament Honors

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Delaware women's basketball team fell to Saint Joseph's, 73-66, in the Hawk Classic Championship. The Fightin' Blue Hens drop to 6-5, while the Hawks rise to 8-3. Ella Wanzer was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts over the weekend, including her season-best 25 points in the semifinals.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Ande'a Cherisier led the team with 16 points to go with three assists and a block.
- Lay Fantroy notched 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting with seven boards and five steals.
- Kailah Correa corralled a career-high six rebounds to go with 11 points
- Safi Kolliegbo rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A back-and-forth first quarter featured eight lead changes that saw the Hawks take a 22-16 advantage into the second quarter. Cherisier had a game-high eight points at the end of the first.
- Saint Joseph's held a 30-18 lead at the second quarter media stoppage with 4:54 left in the opening half. A 6-1 run for the Hens in 1:11 brought the score to 36-29 with 2:18 to go in the quarter. The half ended with St. Joe's taking a 41-32 lead into the locker room.
- Delaware opened the third quarter on a 8-1 run, cutting the deficit to two and forcing SJU to call timeout. A Kolliegbo layup evened the game at 42 with 7:11 left in the third quarter. With 4:58 left in the third quarter, the Hawks held a 48-46 lead. The Hawks went on a 5-0 run to end the quarter, leaving a 55-48 lead for the home team.
- With 6:51 left in regulation, UD trailed 59-54 following a timeout by head coach Sarah Jenkins. A Correa three and a Fantroy driving layup knotted the game up at 59 with 5:38 to play. Correa's pullup jumper gave the Hens a 61-59 lead, their first since 2:14 left in the first quarter. An and-one for Saint Joseph's put the Hawks up 71-66 with 28 ticks left as they held off the Hens.
