Football Set to Renew Rivalry in Home and Home Against Temple

NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware football will renew its rivalry with longtime Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent Temple with a home and home series starting in 2032, the schools announced jointly on Monday. The Owls will return to Newark on September 2, 2032, followed by the Blue Hens embarking to Philadelphia on September 1, 2033.
UD holds the all-time record of 22-14 between the two programs. Both were members of the MAC from 1958-69, with the Blue & Gold claiming six league titles during that span. The two teams played every season from 1954-85, the last time the schools matched up. The Blue Hens won 10-consecutive bouts over the Owls from 1954-63, outscoring them 385-84 during the decade.
The Delaware-Temple rivalry is etched in the record books. Temple owns the two fewest games when it comes to total yards by a Delaware opponent, as the Cherry & White recorded 16 total yards in 1969 and 27 total yards in 1961. Delaware has scored 50 or more points four times against the Owls and has shut them out five times. The squads also played in the first game at Frazer Field, the home of Blue Hens football from 1913-46, with the Hens defeating the Owls, 28-0, on October 18, 1913.
Former Blue Hens made a name for themselves against the Owls with multiple school records being set during the rivalry. In 1985, Darrell Booker broke the Delaware record for most tackles in a single game against Temple with 23, a record that would be tied three more times since then. In 1975, Johnny Bush tallied a 100-yard pick-six against the Owls, a feat that has only been accomplished four other times in school history.
The addition of the Owls to the schedule marks the second former rival added to the 2032 slate, joining James Madison. The Hens travel to Harrisonburg in 2032 to complete the four-game series.
